Nieuwe tool voor BKVT-leden: een lijst met de belangrijkste AI-prompts voor vertalers

De opkomst van kunstmatige intelligentie heeft grote impact op het beroep van vertaler en op onze werkmethodes. Om haar leden hierin te ondersteunen, ontwikkelde de BKVT een lijst met prompts waarmee je kunstmatige intelligentie op een slimme manier in je vertaalwerk kunt gebruiken. Op die manier kun je als taalspecialist ten volle gebruikmaken van de mogelijkheden van AI en je expertise maximaal uitspelen.

De lijst bevat een selectie kant-en-klare prompts voor concrete behoeften van elke vertaler: analyse van teksten, voorbereiding van vertalingen, revisie, terminologische consistentie, aanpassing aan de doelgroep, stilistische verbeteringen, QA-checks enz.

Deze prompts bieden verschillende voordelen voor onze leden:

• tijd besparen bij repetitieve taken;
• betere resultaten dankzij nauwkeurige instructies;
• nieuwe manieren om AI in de dagelijkse werking te gebruiken, zonder in te boeten aan je expertise en kritische denkvermogen;
• zich onderscheiden dankzij het gebruik van specifieke prompts die helpen bij het maken van de juiste taalkundige keuzes met het oog op een goede vertaling. Zo benadruk je je meerwaarde als vertaalprofessional, namelijk het vermogen om een tekst correct te analyseren en aan te passen door de juiste beslissingen te nemen naargelang de vereisten van de klant. Dit zijn allerlei zaken waartoe de eindklant met zijn of haar kennis van AI niet toe in staat is.

Deze lijst zal regelmatig bijgewerkt worden met nieuwe voorbeelden, toepassingen en werkwijzen.

Op de laatste overlegvergadering met de FOD Justitie heeft het directoraat-generaal van de gerechtelijke organisatie aangekondigd het koninklijk besluit Tarieven van 2016, dat momenteel nog steeds de voorwaarden voor de vergoeding van de prestaties van de beëdigd vertalers en tolken vastlegt, te willen herzien.

De voorbije jaren heeft de commissie LinguaJuris van de BKVT al verschillende voorstellen en verzoeken in dit verband ingediend, met name advies A2 MH-SL-JP 934-2024 van de Hoge Raad voor de Zelfstandigen en de KMO (HRZKMO) en het memorandum dat naar aanleiding van de federale verkiezingen van 2024 aan de politieke partijen en gerechtelijke instanties werd gericht.

Op basis van deze documenten heeft de sectorcommissie LinguaJuris nieuwe voorstellen geformuleerd als voorbereiding op de herziening van het KB Tarieven.

The AI Committee has two core objectives: first, to provide members with arguments and tools to defend the added value of human translations; and second, to help members use AI systems.

That is why, last year, we organised a one-day AI training session, during which practical workshops gave translation professionals the opportunity to practise writing prompts. This year, we want to keep informing members about how they can use AI intelligently. The CBTI does not see AI only in terms of it being a threat. As translators, we are aware of the potential pitfalls of machine translation and know what marks a good translation out from an average one. We can provide added value to our clients by combining this knowledge with the possibilities offered by AI tools.

At the same time, it is important to draw clients’ attention to the dangers of machine translation. That is why the AI Commission has developed a ‘toolkit’, which, in its first version, consists of two parts:

• Using several criteria, you can explain to your client when machine translation might be an option and when human translation should definitely be the preferred choice. The decision tree has been deliberately presented in the form of slides so that you, as translation professionals, can use the ones that apply to you or your client.
• We have drawn up a list of arguments highlighting the benefits of human translation. These very concise arguments are set out under three headings: arguments for clients (quality), arguments for professionals (protecting the profession), and arguments related to security.

You may have already seen some of these arguments in our regular social media posts. Feel free to repost them on your own profile. This helps us raise public awareness about the added value of human translation whilst drawing attention to the dangers of machine translation.

Subsequently, the toolkit will be expanded to include prompts that you can use in your translation projects or other work.

Na een rustiger begin van het jaar met minder vergaderingen met de FOD Justitie in tegenstelling tot de grote mobilisatie van de actoren uit de gerechtelijke wereld, waaronder de beëdigd vertalers en tolken, om de regering, de parlementsleden en de bevolking te wijzen op de dringende noodzaak om justitie te herfinancieren, heeft de commissie LinguaJuris haar contacten met de verantwoordelijken van het directoraat-generaal van de rechterlijke organisatie voortgezet in het kader van twee structurele overlegvergaderingen en een vergadering met de voorzitters van de aanvaardingscommissies.

Deze editie gaat over de legalisatie van beëdigde vertalingen voor gebruik in het buitenland en het nieuwe vademecum voor beëdigd vertalers. Er wordt teruggeblikt op recente activiteiten (zoals de EULITA-conferentie en de BKVT-bijeenkomst) en worden enkele praktische regels herhaald. Op 23 januari jongsteleden werd de commissie LinguaJuris van de BKVT uitgenodigd voor een vergadering met de dienst legalisatie van de FOD Buitenlandse Zaken. Deze ontmoeting had tot doel de regels omtrent de legalisatie van de beëdigde vertalingen bestemd voor het buitenland te verduidelijken. Er leefden namelijk een groot aantal misvattingen en misverstanden bij de beëdigd vertalers en tolken.

Deze vergadering en de contacten met de verantwoordelijken van de dienst legalisatie in de daaropvolgende weken hebben geleid tot de opstelling van een paar duidelijke regels, die wij u hier uitleggen.

Dit document bevat ook praktische informatie omtrent de legalisatieprocedure, alsook de types documenten die u kan vertalen. De bevoegde overheden worden er telkens bij vermeld.

Gelieve te noteren dat dit document uitsluitend bestemd is voor de BKVT-leden. Gelieve het daarom niet verder te verspreiden. Indien nodig kunt u de hierin vervatte informatie tonen aan de klant voor referentie, met naleving van de beperkte verspreiding.

De algemene voorwaarden in de bijgevoegde documenten zijn ontstaan vanuit de noodzaak die professionele vertalers en tolken voelden om hun rechten te beschermen ten opzichte van hun opdrachtgevers.

Bij de uitwerking van de tekst werd de leden gevraagd om tijdens regionale vergaderingen hun standpunt door te geven. Het project vond heel wat weerklank en het was een werk van lange adem, dat niet tot een goed einde gebracht zou zijn zonder de actieve medewerking van vele collega’s. Hartelijk dank aan iedereen!

Elke vertaler of tolk krijgt vroeg of laat te maken met een geheimhoudingsovereenkomst. Vaak wordt die overeenkomst opgelegd door de klant. Maar is die overeenkomst wel redelijk? En wat als u zelf de klant bent en zo’n overeenkomst wil afsluiten met een onderaannemer?

De BKVT biedt haar leden daarom een sjabloon van geheimhoudingsovereenkomst aan: een stevig, juridisch correct en evenwichtig document dat aangepast kan worden aan specifieke behoeften.

In August, the Belgian federal government announced that many measures to get the COVID pandemic under control would be eased as of September and October. In the meantime, however, face coverings have made their return and the Covid Safe Ticket has arrived. This situation has led to quite some uncertainty amongst interpreters and clients alike. It goes without saying that it is in the interest of all that everybody can work in a safe environment. That is why CBTI’s Interpreters’ Commission decided to check last year’s recommendation for a safe return to work against the current legislation, the Generic Guide for combatting the spread of COVID-19 at work and the protocols developed by the events industry together with the FPS Employment. The result of this careful examination can be found in the new Recommendations for a safe workplace during the restart after the critical phase of the Covid pandemic.

De Gids voor vertalers en tolken is een verzameling van informatie voor beginnende en gevorderde vertalers en tolken. De inlichtingen – die geregeld bijgewerkt worden – zijn heel omvattend: ze gaan van de opleiding en de vestiging als zelfstandig vertaler over verschillende werkinstrumenten, informatie over facturatie en belastingen tot vragen in verband met verzekeringen, sociale zekerheid en pensioen … Kortom, een heel nuttig naslagwerk voor iedere zelfstandige vertaler en tolk.

Wist u trouwens dat de BKVT haar leden ook een verzekeringsovereenkomst rechtsbijstand biedt? Die dekt alle mogelijke juridische problemen bij de uitoefening van uw beroep (geschillen met klanten of leveranciers, fiscaal recht, administratief recht enz.). Dit is de collectieve ALLRISK RECHTSBIJSTAND van D.A.S.

Als effectief lid van de BKVT kunt u de bescherming genieten van deze verzekering met een verminderde premie van EUR 269,88 per jaar (voor max. 3 personen die in hetzelfde kantoor werken, met een supplement van EUR 78,23 per bijkomende persoon), een zeer concurrentiële premie voor de geboden waarborgen, die volledig fiscaal aftrekbaar is als beroepskost.

De BKVT heeft voor haar effectieve leden een verzekering Burgerrechtelijke Beroepsaansprakelijkheid gesloten bij verzekeringsonderneming AXA Belgium. Deze polis is uitsluitend bestemd voor effectieve leden van de BKVT.

De beroepsaansprakelijkheidspolis van Axa is een aansprakelijkheidsverzekering, wat betekent dat de betrokken maatschappij derden zal vergoeden als zij door uw schuld, onvoorzichtigheid of achteloosheid schade geleden hebben, als u aansprakelijk gesteld wordt (bijvoorbeeld als de derde door een slechte vertaling financiële, morele of andere schade lijdt, of als u iets stukmaakt in een tolkcabine enz.). Het is een schadeverzekering.

U hebt nog geen enkele verzekering voor uw beroepsaansprakelijkheid en wenst aan te sluiten bij het contract? Word lid of neem contact op met het secretariaat.

Premies

• 152,95 EUR voor een vertaler/beëdigd vertaler/tolk die met 2 actieve talen en maximaal 4 passieve talen werkt;
• 262,20 EUR voor een vertaler/beëdigd vertaler/tolk die met 2 actieve talen en maximaal 4 tot 7 passieve talen werkt;
• 114,71 EUR voor een ‘zuivere’ tolk, die dus uitsluitend tolkactiviteiten verricht.

Facultatieve uitbreidingen:

1. Vertalingen in het farmaceutische domein: bijpremie van 109,25 EUR
2. Persoonlijke BA van onderaannemers:
   • 81,94 EUR om de persoonlijke aansprakelijkheid te verzekeren van een onderaannemer die lid is van de BKVT
   • 109,25 EUR om de persoonlijke aansprakelijkheid te verzekeren van een onderaannemer die geen lid is van de BKVT
3. Uitbreiding ‘redactiewerk’ : bijpremie van 54,63 EUR

Hoe inschrijven?

Er zijn 3 mogelijke situaties:

1. U hebt nog geen enkele verzekering voor uw beroepsaansprakelijkheid en wenst aan te sluiten bij het nieuwe contract: Daarvoor volstaat het om het bijgevoegde document in te vullen, te ondertekenen en naar ons terug te sturen. De dekking zal ingaan op 1 januari 2025.
2. U bent al aangesloten bij de collectieve verzekering van de BKVT: In dat geval blijft u verzekerd door het nieuwe contract dat we bij AXA Belgium hebben gesloten. In de loop van december sturen wij u een betalingsbericht met het nieuwe tarief. Toch vragen we u om ons zoals elk jaar te melden dat u uw contract wilt verlengen.
3. U hebt al een individueel contract bij AXA (of een andere verzekeringsmaatschappij): Het is perfect mogelijk om aan te sluiten bij ons collectieve contract en de gunstige voorwaarden op het vlak van gedekte bedragen en franchises te genieten die voorbehouden zijn voor BKVT-leden. Vergeet uiteraard niet om uw individuele contract eerst op te zeggen, uiterlijk 3 maanden voor de vervaldag ervan.
   Als u uw individuele contract opzegt en aansluit bij het collectieve contract, betaalt u voor het jaar 2025 de volgende premie:
   • bij aansluiting in de loop van het verzekeringsjaar tussen 1 januari en 30 juni 2025 wordt de volledige premie aangerekend;
   • bij aansluiting in de loop van het verzekeringsjaar tussen 1 juli en 31 december 2025 wordt geen pro rata premie aangerekend.

   Het is dus heel belangrijk de vervaldatum van uw individuele contract te controleren en de opzeggingsbrief tijdig te versturen. Neem in geval van twijfel gerust contact met ons op.
   Zoals in de vorige gevallen is het voldoende om hiervoor het specifieke document terug te sturen dat u terugvindt in het gedeelte van de website voorbehouden voor de leden, met vermelding van de datum waarop uw individuele contract ten einde loopt.

By definition, service providers who work in a liberal profession are free to set their own rates and fees. This freedom leads, in our field as in any other, to very wide variations in practices.

Like other national professional associations, the Belgian Chamber of Translators and Interpreters (CBTI-BKVT) wanted to paint a reliable picture of rate practices in the Belgian translation and interpreting market, both to inform the various players in the field (students, beginning or seasoned practitioners) and to advance the rights and interests of the professions it represents.

This market survey report essentially presents information on the current rates, but you can also find additional information on topics such as membership of a professional association or use of technological tools.

The results in this report are not to be considered recommendations, but merely a snapshot of the Belgian translation and interpreting market in January 2018, and should thus be treated with the usual caution.

De Belgische Kamer voor Vertalers en Tolken (BKVT) werkt al sinds jaren met de universiteiten samen om zo de instroming van de pas afgestudeerde vertalers en tolken in de arbeidsmarkt te bevorderen. Zo biedt zij eerst en vooral een Gids voor jonge zelfstandige vertalers aan, die erg nuttig is voor al wie zijn eerste stappen wil zetten in het beroep. Verder is er het gratis lidmaatschap van een jaar dat de BKVT aanbiedt aan alle studenten die aan een Belgische universiteit ingeschreven zijn voor een masteropleiding.

In 2017 heeft de BKVT beslist dat het tijd was een oude traditie opnieuw tot leven te wekken: de toekenning van een Prijs voor de Beste Masterproef voor toegepast onderzoek inzake vertalen of tolken.

Met dit initiatief wil de BKVT de academische wereld dichter bij het beroepsleven brengen en op die manier bijdragen tot een vlottere overgang tussen beide. We willen dan ook vooral drie pas afgestudeerden in de kijker zetten en we willen alle professionals uit deze sector ertoe aanzetten om meer belangstelling te tonen voor dit toegepaste onderzoek.

Zoals u kan lezen in het reglement dat u hiernaast kunt downloaden, is het inderdaad de bedoeling om drie masterproeven te belonen die handelen over toegepast onderzoek dat rechtstreeks betrekking heeft op het beroep, bijvoorbeeld omdat ze nieuwe technologieën analyseren waarmee we als professionals geconfronteerd kunnen worden, omdat ze een markttrend bestuderen of omdat ze zich buigen over problemen waarmee de beoefenaar van ons beroep geconfronteerd wordt.

De BKVT legt hierbij een zware taak op de schouders van de deelnemende instellingen: zij zullen immers elk één (1) masterproef mogen uitkiezen uit de masterproeven die verdedigd zijn voor het behalen van de titel van Master in het vertalen, in het tolken of in de meertalige communicatie. Ze mogen dus elk één enkele masterproef indienen. Vervolgens zal de jury de geselecteerde masterproeven bestuderen om zo de masterproef te selecteren die de grootste belangstelling wegdraagt bij de beroepsbeoefenaars en die tevens een waardevolle bijdrage tot het toegepaste onderzoek levert.

De winnaar krijgt onder andere een cheque van 500 euro, een permanente gebruikslicentie voor SDL Studio Freelance en een jaar gratis lidmaatschap van de BKVT. Zijn of haar masterproef zal ook meermaals aan bod komen in publicaties in De Taalkundige, het driemaandelijkse tijdschrift van de BKVT. Twee andere genomineerden krijgen eveneens een jaar gratis lidmaatschap cadeau en mogen gratis deelnemen aan twee workshops die de BKVT organiseert. Als u met uw faculteit wil deelnemen, verzoeken wij u om een masterproef te selecteren die verdedigd werd in het academiejaar, en om ons uw keuze mee te delen vóór 15 oktober.

The Chamber has joined forces with the SFT, ASTTI, ITI and the UNAPL to publish a brochure called Translation – Getting it Right. A Guide to Buying Translations. Available in thirteen different languages, it answers many questions that anyone buying a translation might ask and helps the buyer get it right.

There are thousands of ways for a translation to go off track: ridiculous deadlines, ambiguities in the source text (which will remain unless the translator asks questions), the “machine translations” that go unrevised, not having a native speaker proofread the drafts, translator with little or no experience or background in the subject of the text, poor coordination of large projects, weak cheap translations, weak expensive translations, no client input, and so on.

If you don’t meet the conditions set for full membership status, or if you are a student, teacher, employee, civil servant, pensioner, etc., you can still join as an affiliated member.

Article 4 of the Bylaws of the BCTI allows the following to be eligible to become an affiliated member:

1. Interns: people who intend to exercise the profession of translator or interpreter on a professional basis but do not yet satisfy the criteria of Article 3, such as students, beginners, and part-time employees. As soon as the intern satisfies the conditions of Article 3, he or she can apply to become a full member with the procedure described in Article 3.
2. Employees: people with an employment contract as translator or interpreter.
3. Related professions: all other professions from the applied linguistics sector. The Board of Directors can request them to associate themselves in the form of a permanent sector commission established by the Board of Directors (cf. Art. 29 § 2 of the Bylaws). The internal operational rules and the conditions for membership are established by the Board of Directors in consultation with the commission involved. The commission shall appoint a representative who shall participate as expert on the Board of Directors when an item on the agenda concerns the commission involved.
4. Seniors: all retired persons after a career as translator or interpreter or in a related profession who have ceased their activities, no longer have an active VAT number, or a contract of employment with the same objective.

Affiliated members have no voting rights in the General Meeting and may not become a member of the Board of Directors. They receive the information and the publications of the Association and have access to that portion of the website that is reserved for the members. They may participate in the General Meeting with an advisory vote.
