AI Workshops: Practical and responsible AI in translation and interpreting

From local LLMs to terminology support

Explore how large language models (LLMs) can support professional language work. Join master’s students, lecturers, translators and interpreters for practical learning and exchange. Both workshops are in English. No prior knowledge of AI is required.

Two smaller groups attend both workshops, switching after the coffee break. The reception offers space to exchange ideas, network and discuss potential internships.

01       How can you use large language models responsibly while keeping control of your data?

Curious about large language models but unsure how they work? Or what happens to the information you enter into them? This accessible workshop introduces the technology through illustrative use-cases and recent social issues, and suggests a hands-on approach to on-device models with examples from professional language practice. You will explore confidentiality and data-privacy risks and discover how a locally installed language model can be used without uploading professional material to an external online service. The workshop will help you assess when an LLM could be useful, when caution is needed and which type of tool may be appropriate for a particular task.

02       How can LLM-based chatbots support terminology work in translation and interpreting?

How might an LLM-based chatbot assist with the terminology work involved in preparing or completing a translation or interpreting assignment? In this practical workshop, you will explore how chatbots can support tasks such as clarifying specialised concepts, identifying terms and possible equivalents, comparing definitions and usage, and organising terminological information. You will learn how to formulate effective prompts, refine chatbot responses, and critically evaluate and verify the information generated. The shared examples and exercises will be provided in English, after which you will be invited to apply the approaches to another of your working languages. By the end of the workshop, you will have acquired practical prompting and evaluation strategies that you can adapt to your own terminology workflows.
