As you are aware, the interpreting market is more unstable and unpredictable than ever. Artificial intelligence, the economic climate and the national and international political landscape are creating major challenges to the long-term sustainability of our profession. Today, many interpreters are wondering whether they will be able to make a living from interpreting in the years to come.

Through this study, the Bureau aims to determine whether, in 2026, interpreters can still make a decent living solely from interpreting. The aim is to establish whether the concerns expressed by some members of the profession are widely shared and supported by evidence. The results of this study will be shared with our members in order to provide an overview of the current state of the profession. In a second phase, the Bureau would like to explore solutions to help interpreters transition to other careers and/or develop complementary professional activities.
The results will also be shared with universities to help students make informed decisions about their career paths and future professional choices.
