📅 Tuesday 16 December · 6:45pm – 9:00pm
📍 Press Club, 95 Rue Froissart, 1040 Brussels
After informal evenings dedicated to Latin, Brusseleer and French, we’re heading north for our December session: Danish.
The format stays simple, friendly and low-key: an informal gathering to explore a language, a culture, and a country — without any academic stiffness, but with plenty of curiosity, questions, and good humour.
For the first 45 minutes or so, Julian will be in conversation with Søren Dalsgaard, a former Danish interpreter now working for the European Parliament’s visitor service. Together, they’ll touch on:
- Some basics of Danish and a few handy phrases
- Parallels between Old English and Danish
- Vikings, because how could we not
- Highlights of Danish popular culture
- A bit of Danish politics for context
- Etymology, anecdotes, and the usual linguistic detours
In the second half (another 45 minutes or so), the discussion opens up to everyone. Feel free to come with:
- A Danish-related anecdote
- A question about the language or the culture
- An example of linguistic influence (in either direction)
- Or simply your curiosity and willingness to join the conversation
After the event, anyone who wants to continue the evening over dinner in a nearby restaurant is very welcome. We’ll need to book, so please indicate if you’d like to join.
Julian will provide drinks and snacks for the Press Club part of the evening.
💶 Participation fee (for food/drink at the Press Club):
- €10 general rate
- €5 for students, unemployed participants, or low income
📩 To register:
Send an email to JulianAHale@gmail.com, mentioning:
- what you’d like to drink
- whether you plan to join the dinner afterwards
🕒 Time: 6:45pm – around 8:30/9:00pm
Whether you already speak a bit of Danish, have a story connected to Denmark, or just enjoy discovering new languages in good company, you’re warmly invited to join us.
